MATHEMATICAL SOCIETY “Mathopolis”

The students’ Mathematics Society ‘Mathopolis’ of Dyal Singh College is devoted to pursuing activities aimed at fostering interest in mathematics, its applications and in the creative expression of mathematical ideas. The society receives immense participation from the students as well as the teaching fraternity. Each year, the society organizes a fresher’s welcome function for the incoming batch, a two-day Mathematics Fest, lectures by eminent Mathematicians, an excursion for the students of the department and a farewell for the final year students.

SOCIETY ACTIVITIES

Freshers’ Welcome: 1^st October, 2024

 A Fresher’s Welcome was organized to create a platform for new students to interact with their teachers and seniors. A fun filled atmosphere was created through interactive games and performances. Titles such as Mr. Fresher, Ms. Fresher, Mr. Well Dressed & Ms. Well Dressed were given to the winning participants.

Career Counselling Session: 19^th October, 2024

 A career counselling session was held on September 19^th , 2024 for the students of B.Sc (H) Mathematics. Prof. Arun Pal Singh from the Dept. of Mathematics was the speaker who demonstrated to the students about the NEP course structure and career options after doing B.Sc(H) Mathematics.

An Orientation/Interaction Program: 30^th August, 2024

 An orientation program was organised for the newly admitted students of B.Sc(H) Mathematics on 30^thAugust, 2024 at 12:30 pm in Room No. 103.

Women in Mathematics Day: 22^nd May, 2024

 Women in Mathematics Day – 2024 was celebrated on 22/05/2024 under “May-12 initiative”, a global initiative to celebrate Maryam Mirzakhani’s birthday, the first female Field Medalist. An expert talk was given by Prof. Shreemayee Bora, Professor, Department of Mathematics, IIT Guwahati.

Farewell: 24^th April, 2024

A Farewell was organized on 24^th April, 2024 in the department of Mathematics for the final year students of the batch 2021-2024.

Science Fair: 28^th -29^th February, 2024

 The Department of Mathematics participated in the Science Fair of the college. Students of the society performed their activities by displaying Models, Rangoli & Mathematical Games under the stall of the department of mathematics.

Academic Talk: 29^th February, 2024

 An academic talk was delivered by the speakers Prof. Geetha Venkataraman, a person of Mathematics, from the School of Liberal Studies, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Delhi on 29^th February, 2024.

Career Counselling: 28^th February, 2024

 As a part of the session (What After Science Degree? Sciences and Sustainable Livelihoods?), A career counselling session was held on 28^th February for the students of B.Sc(H) Mathematics. Dr. Namita and Dr. Monika Choudhary from the Dept. of Mathematics were the speakers.

Lecture on digital marketing and resume building: 27^th October, 2023

 A lecture on digital marketing and resume building was delivered as a part of the Academic Talk by Indian Institute of digital education (IIDE) in the seminar room.

FDP: 11^th -16^th September, 2023

 Faculty Development Programme organized by the Department of Mathematics, Dyal Singh College in collaboration with the Mahatma Hansraj Faculty Development Centre (MHFDC) Hansraj College (University of Delhi) in online mode under the able Coordinator-ship of Dr. Rajeev Kumar. The speakers were invited from IIT Ropar, IIT Roorkee, IIT Dhanbad, IIT Jammu, NIT Warangal, DRDO Delhi and TIFR Bangalore.

Invited Talk on International Day: 14^th March, 2023

An Invited Talk on “Exploring the world of Vedic Mathematics” was delivered by Dr. Neha Bhatia. A documentary titled “Mathematics is the Queen of Science” was also screened on this occasion.

Excursion: 2^nd-7^th March, 2023

A trip to Himachal Pradesh was organised for the 4^th and 6^th Semester students from 2-7 March 2023. The group visited a number of important places in which trekking and other sports events were organised for the students.

ALPHEST 2023-Departmental Fest: 27^th-28^thJanuary, 2023

Students from various colleges participated in various events of this fest.

Freshers’ Welcome: 23^rd January, 2023

Rubaru’ 23, a party to welcome our freshers was held on January 23, 2023. The event was followed by enthralling performances by the students of 5^th and 3^rd semester, and other interesting games.

Cricket Match: 14^th November, 2022

An Intra-Department Cricket Match was held between 3^rd and 5^th Semester students.

Orientation Programme: 3^rd November, 2022

The “Orientation Programme” was held for the benefit of the freshers to apprise them about the college, the department and other important matters related to their curriculum.

An Invited Talk on the “Healthy Body and Mind Through Ayurveda” was delivered by Dr. Ravi Gogia.

A session on “Career Counselling” was held on September 6, 2022 to provide crucial insights into the range of career opportunities available for the students.

 An online lecture was delivered by Dr. Ashish Mishra, Institute of Exact and Natural Sciences, Federal University of Para, Brazil on the topic of “The Beauty of Bijection”.

Alumni Meet: 29^th April, 2022

 The Department organized its very first Alumni Meet in online mode in which more than 150 participants including 100 alumni, current year students and the faculty members of the department participated.

Farewell: 11^th May, 2022

 Students, in full zeal, organized a fun filled program for the departing batch. There were games, performances and competition to win titles of Mr. & Ms. Farewell along with Mr. & Ms. Well Dressed.

Online Fresher’s Welcome: 17^th April, 2021

 During the pandemic, an online freshers welcome was organized with participation of more than 150 students.

ZETA 2020 – The Annual Departmental Fest: 25^th-26^th February, 2020

 The two-day event witnessed an augmented audience of students from different colleges of University of Delhi as well as other universities.

Seminar on Personality Development: 14^th February, 2020

 In this spirit, the Mathematical Society conducted a seminar on personality development sponsored by Corporate Giant ‘Gillette’.

 Prof. Sudesh K Srivastav, Department of Biostatistics and Data Science,Tulane University, New Orleans, LA, USA delivered a very informative lecture on “Bioinformatics: A Data Scientists’ Perspective”.
