ABOUT THE GEOGRAPHY SOCIETY
Geography Society of the College is very active in organizing lectures, celebrations (fresher’s welcome), Annual Meet- Dharini, workshops, field works and various other activities. The society provides a platform for the students to explore their talent in organizing events, performing socio-cultural activities, etc. In the year 2019-20, the two day Annual Geo-Fest ‘Dharini-2020’ was organized on the focal theme “Sustainable Development Goals,” on 20-21 February, 2020 which was inaugurated by Professor S.C. Rai, Department of Geography, University of Delhi, who spoke on the focal theme “Water Resource Sustainability. Another Guest, Smt. Ritu Jaiswal, Mukhiya, Gram Panchayat Raj Singhwahini, Sitamarhi, Bihar, also spoke on ‘Women’s Role in Sustainable Rural Development,” on the occasion. The fest also included inter-college competitions like debate on “Achieving Sustainability is a myth” online Poster-Making on “SDGs”, Open Mic (House of Words), Quiz (Horizon Beyond Geography), Skit (Theatre Geek), Rangoli (Rang-Tarang), Photography (Geo capture) Best out of Waste (Junkyard Devise), Treasure Hunt (Pirates of the Conundrum), and a film screening on Sustainable Development. The program was very well attended by more than 200 students. The efforts of all the faculty members and the office bearers in the successful organization of events were appreciated and students were awarded certificates.
GEOGRAPHY SOCIETY REPORT, 2019-20
The Geography Society organised a series of lectures on the topic of current significance in Geography. The first lecture was on 20th September, 2019 in which Professor Sudesh Nangia, Centre for Study of Regional Development, Jawaharlal Nehru University gave a talk on ‘Science of Geography: Contemporary Challenges’. The society has also invited international speaker to talk on aspects of physical geography. Dr. Alexey Maslakov, Research Fellow at Faculty of Geography, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia delivered a very interesting lecture on ‘Secrets of Permafrost’ on 23rd October, 2019. It was very well participated by various students and faculty members from different colleges. Another very learned speaker, Professor Anu Kapur, Department of Geography, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi gave a talk on ‘Where is Geography in India’, on 22nd January, 2020. The Department has also organized a One Day workshop on ‘Monitoring Landscape Dynamics using QGIS and RStudio’, in which Dr. Pankaj Kumar, Department of Geography, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi was the resource person on 6th February, 2020. Approximately 40 students had hands-on training on the aforesaid mentioned GIS software’s. During the lockdown period, a webinar is organized on ‘Urbanisation: An Inequitable Process’ on 28th April 2020. Dr. Taruna Bansal, Associate Professor of Geography from JMI University was the guest speaker and more than 120 people participated from the different parts of the country.
