About the Department
Department of Zoology was established in the year 1959 when Dyal Singh College shifted to Delhi from Lahore. Since then it had been teaching and preparing students in Pre Medical Sciences till 1980. In 1980, it started the B.Sc ( General) course at undergraduate level and, subsequently, in 1990, the B.Sc. (Hons) course in Applied Zoology was also introduced. In 2010, the Department started the undergraduate course of Zoology (Hons.) which is currently running in the CBCS (LOCF) mode. The Department also caters to other interdisciplinary courses such as B.Sc. (Program) life sciences, General elective courses for Honours students from different streams, skill enhancement courses for sciences, etc. The Department has well equipped laboratories with state of art instrumentation facilities where students can perform the experiments and develop technical skills. The museum of the Department also boasts of many rare specimen which are well preserved including non-chodates , chordates, Entomological specimen, osteology specimen and other slides. There is a Departmental library also which constitutes of books donated by faculty members which is accessible to students of the Department in addition to the main library of the college. The Department has well qualified, dedicated and knowledgeable faculty members who are actively involved in teaching and research. At present, there are 14 faculty members including Permanent, temporary and guest teachers. The faculty members are also dedicatedly involved in mentoring students in small groups in pursuing their academic goals as well as overall development of their personality. The teacher- student relationship in the Department is very cordial and all teachers are always accessible to the students. The Department has an active Zoological Society ‘ZOOPHORIA’ where students can display their curricular/ extracurricular skills.
