About the Department
The Department of Physics was established in the year 1959. There are a total of 24 full-time permanent faculty members. Most of the faculty members hold a Ph.D. from prestigious institutes such as the University of Delhi, National Physical Laboratory, Banaras Hindu University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), and others. This demonstrates their expertise and dedication to their respective fields. In the field of Physics, teachers explore various topics including Experimental Physics such as Material Research, Thin Film Technology, Optoelectronics, Superconductivity, Microwave Electronics, and Satellite Communication. They also delve into Electronic Materials and Devices, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Magnetic nano-structures and Thin films, Material Science and Photonics, High Energy Ion Beam Collision, Resonance Energy Transfer in Nanomaterials, and Electronic and Magnetic Properties of 2D materials, among others. The field of Theoretical Physics encompasses a diverse range of specialties such as Super Symmetry, High Energy Physics, Non-Linear Dynamics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Remote Sensing, etc. These areas of study involve complex theories and principles that contribute to our understanding of the physical world.
Faculty members have research publications in reputed national and international peer-reviewed/Scopus-indexed journals and some of them have published book chapters. Handful number of faculty members have also completed postdoctoral research. Most of the faculty members are currently engaged in ongoing research endeavors. We are also engaged in collaborative Indo-French project titled “Composite Models at the Interface of Theory and Phenomenology,” which is valued at several thousand euros.
Most of the teachers demonstrate a proactive involvement in the administrative functions of the college, often serving as conveners of different committees. The department is host to a highly active Physics Society known as COSMOS. The department further consists of a number of committees, such as the Parent-Teachers Association (PTA), Student-Alumni Association, Mentor-Mentee Groups, etc. There are four well-equipped Physics Laboratories, two Computer Labs, and three Dark Room Labs (for Optics and Ballistic Galvanometer experiments) in the Physics Department.
The students of this department have pursued a wide range of careers, such as teaching, research, multinational corporations, administrative jobs, defense services, scientists and more. Furthermore, they possess the ability to gain admission into esteemed universities and renowned post-graduate research institutions in the fields of Science and Engineering such as TIFR, IISc, IITs, IISER Bhopal, JNCASR, Bengaluru, and National Centre for Radio Astrophysics in India and University College London, Imperial College of London/UCL, Max Planck Germany, University of Liverpool, UK, Politecnico di Milano, Italy abroad.
